October 6, 2012The St. Xavier Bombers completed their sweep of GCL South opponents and locked up the league championship by defeating the LaSalle Lancers, 31-14.
St. Xavier (5-2, 3-0) used a 21-point third quarter to put the game away and secure the victory. With the rain pounding down at times neither team could get much offense going during the first half of action and both offenses struggled to take care of the football.
The Bombers got out to an early lead as Robby Reis returned a Brad Burkhart interception for 82 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter.
LaSalle (4-3, 0-2) tied the game two minutes in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run Morgan Wilcox as the game went to halftime tied at 7-7.
That's when St. Xavier turned on the heat on the cool night as the parlayed big defensive plays into more scoring opportunities.
Running back CJ Hilliard started the scoring barrage with a 9-yard touchdown run on the Bombers' first possession of the second half. Minutes late Justin Hilliard picked off another Burkhart pass and returned 22 yards for a Bombers' TD.
Down 21-7, the Lancers responded with a decent drive that ended on a Jason Bell 21-yard TD scamper. However, the momentum wouldn't last long as just 30 seconds later St. Xavier's Nick Tensing would break free for a 59-yard touchdown run and once again put the lead at double digits.
Aaron Berry rounded on the night's scoring with a fourth-quarter, 38-yard field goal as St. Xavier prevailed on the road with their third straight victory.
Tensing struggled on the night through the air, completing just 8-of-21 passes for 78 yards with 0 TD's and three interceptions. However, the junior made up for it on the ground by rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. Ben Glines added 96 yards on 13 carries in the win.
Burkart threw the ball an astounding 61 times in the loss, but completed just 24 passes while finishing with 302 yards, 0 TD's and three interceptions. Derek Kief led all receivers with 109 yards on eight catches for the Lancers.
St. Xavier travels north to battle St. Edward next Saturday while LaSalle will look to bounce back as they visit Brother Rice.
